Primary Care subgroup

The Primary Care Subgroup of the UK Preconception Partnership brings together clinicians, researchers and professionals who work in public health and community and charitable organisations to improve the delivery of preconception care in primary care settings.

The group aims to strengthen collaboration across disciplines and UK nations, helping to share expertise, resources and networks to support research, implementation and wider dissemination of preconception health tools and interventions relevant to primary care.

A key focus of the Subgroup is to support collaborative research and funding opportunities, map ongoing projects, and showcase work across the UK to maximise synergies and reduce duplication. The group also aims to contribute to improvements in national guidance and clinical practice, including supporting updates to the NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary on preconception care, ensuring guidance is practical, inclusive and evidence-based for use in primary care.

The Subgroup is co-chaired by Dr Danielle Schoenaker and Dr Michael Daly.

  • NIHR Fellowship: building the case for preconception care in primary care to support preparation for pregnancy

This NIHR-funded research programme aims to develop and test a preconception care pathway for use in general practice. The research will: 1) prioritise key preconception topics that can be addressed in primary care and co-develop a Core Outcome Set to support consistent evaluation; 2) use linkage of routine health datasets to quantify the impact of changes in preconception health behaviours on pregnancy and longer-term maternal and child outcomes, and on health inequalities; 3) co-develop a preconception care pathway through stakeholder discussions, which will be pilot-tested in general practices to assess feasibility, acceptability, and potential economic return on investment for the NHS.

  • Co-PREPARE: Co-production for pre-pregnancy health improvement through primary care

Funded by the NIHR Three Schools Prevention Programme, the Co-PREPARE project involves co-producing a primary care-based intervention that supports preconception health improvement for women and women's partners, through in-depth interviews and consensus development workshops with primary care professionals and members of the public. It is led by Joint Chief Investigators Dr Michael Daly and Prof Ruth Kipping at the University of Bristol, with co-investigators from the Universities of Birmingham, Newcastle, Nottingham and Warwick.
