A preconception care toolkit was created as a collaboration between the UK Preconception Partnership Early- and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCR) Network and the Faculty of Public Health Special Interest Group on Health of Women and Girls. It was developed in response to public and expert consensus on the need to tackle inequalities in preconception health and care.

The toolkit is intended for professionals responsible for commissioning health or health improvement services in England*. This includes (but is not limited to) teams within Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), Local Authorities and healthcare providers.

* Noting there are elements of the toolkit which are broadly applicable across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The toolkit aims to support professionals to:

  • Access the data indicators that enable the preconception health of a population to be assessed and monitored over time.
  • Access key guidance documents and summaries of the latest evidence, specifically related to the commissioning and implementation of interventions to improve preconception health.
  • Read about different approaches and models of preconception care in England, including how services have been designed to reduce inequalities in health outcomes.

The toolkit has not set out to establish recommendations regarding preconception care policy and practice. Instead, the toolkit aims to signpost the most relevant and useful resources.
